The Creative Industries Sectors

 

These Sectors (Industry) and Definitions are only given here as guidance to visitors.

As stated the definition of the Creative Industry and which sectors it applies to is still up for debate. It is possible to be in many few sectors at the same time, and usually creative individuals find themselves moving from one industry sector to another as their experience and careers develop, or as their client base matures.

1. Advertising (Publishing Industry)

Definition: Advertising, Press and Public Relation services

2. Animation (Design)

Definition: Generating time sequence motion using Story boarding, Object Definition, Key Frames and In-Betweening

3. Antique

Definition:

4. Architecture (Design, Built Environment)

Definition: the art and science of designing buildings and structures

5. Ceramics (Crafts)

Definition: Pottery and ceramic artefact

6. Community Arts (Education)

Definition: Creative Industries servicing the Community and Voluntary Sector It generally applies if you provide workshops, tuition, etc.

7. Crafts (Crafts)

Definition: All other types of crafts that are not listed here, plus a generic terms for Antiques, Ceramics, Crafts, Fine Art, Photography, Furniture, Fashion, Textiles, Jewellery, Public Arts, Sculpture, Photography, Woodcrafts etc.

8. Dance (Performing Arts)

Definition: an artistic form of non-verbal communication

9. Events (Entertainment/Leisure)

Definition: Key overlap with the cultural industries, usually putting a demand on the creative industry for performers, artists etc. include event organising, event promotions in any sector

10. Fashion (Fashion)

Definition: fashion design, pattern cutting, alterations etc.

11. Film (Screen Based Media)

Definition: production, directing, writing, acting and all other associated activities

12. Fine Art (Art)

Definition: Art created for purely aesthetic expression, communication, or contemplation

13. Furniture (Crafts)

Definition: The movable articles in a room or an establishment that make it fit for living or working

14. Games (Screen Based Industry)

Definition: the design of recreational activities involving one or more players

15. Graphic Design (Design)

Definition: use of graphic media (such as colour, symbol, and type) to communicate a style or expression

16. Interactive media (Screen Based Media)

Definition: It is dubbed interactive because the user, or advertising target, can typically interact with the content and advertising

17. Interior Design (Design)

Definition: the trade of planning the layout and furnishings of an architectural interior

18. Jewellery (Craft)

Definition: ornamental devices worn by persons, typically made with gems and precious metals

19. Music (Performing Arts)

Definition: Music Industry: musicians, music managers etc

20. Performing Arts

Definition: Dance, Performing Arts

21. Photography (Art)

Definition: The art or process of producing images

22. Product Design (Design)

Definition: develop physical solutions to specific needs

23. Public Arts (Art)

Definition: the presentation of installation art in the public space

24. Publishing

Definition: the business of issuing printed matter for sale or distribution

25. Radio

Definition: medium for communication; could be commercial, community or RSL radio

26. Sculpture

Definition: any three-dimensional form created as an artistic expression

27. Software Design

Definition: creating and maintaining software applications by applying technologies and practices from computer science, project management, engineering, application domains, and other fields

28. Television

Definition: producing, directing, writing, running and all related activities for the television industry

29. Textiles

Definition: any type of material made from fibres or other extended linear materials such as thread or yarn

30. Video

Definition: any type of material made from fibres or other extended linear materials such as thread or yarn

31. Visual Arts

Definition: visual arts are original pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works, which include two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of fine, graphic, and applied art

32. Web Design

Definition: arrangement and creation of web pages that in turn make up a web site, could be front-end (graphics), or back-end (programming)

33. Woodcrafts

Definition: skill in carving or fashioning objects from wood

34. Writer

Definition: those who write creatively or professionally, or those who have written in many different forms
