Hi i'm Surinder and I'm currently working as the Community
Outreach Business Advisor for the project. I have been working in the voluntary
sector for the last 2 years and have built an extensive portfolio of clients/community
organisations from all different ethnic groups in the community.
I studied Business law at the City University London and then
had several high profile roles with major government organisations in London
and Australia before returning back to the West Midlands.
My role at the Creative Launchpad is to build relationships
with the hard to reach groups who are currently not accessing creative business
support and want to enter the creative industries as well as marketing the project
in these areas.
In the last 6 months we have successfully run outreach services
in Coventry, Wolverhampton, West Bromwich and Smethwick as well as with Broad
Street Connexions and ENTA Training.
In 2006 we hope to set up similar outreach services in Walsall,
Dudley and Handsworth as well as Stoke on Trent and Hereford.
My role has allowed me to build a strong network of contacts
through local government and community projects as well as with influential
members in the community which I hope will now enable me to now to improve the
access for members of the BME community into the creative industries.
I have also played an important role in helping creative artists
set up community friendly groups which will put them in a position to receive
funding so that they can take the creative arts into the community.
On a personal level I have hosted and presented several
community events and also had my own radio show on Jawani Fm as well as played
various Asian musical instruments for numerous artists as well as represented
my University and College at both sports and political debate.
